NCRB's Crime in India is the official statistical record of registered crime. Its cyber-crime chapter counts FIRs under the IT Act and IPC/BNS sections by state, city and motive. Because it counts FIRs and not portal complaints, its numbers are far lower than NCRP complaint figures; both are correct, they measure different things. The report usually appears with a lag of a year or more.

What it can do for you

  • Provide state-wise, city-wise and motive-wise cyber crime data for research and reporting.
  • Run the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network (CCTNS) that links police stations.

What it cannot do

  • Take complaints or investigate.

Frequently asked questions

Why do NCRB numbers differ so much from the 1930 numbers?

NCRB counts registered FIRs; NCRP counts complaints, most of which never become FIRs. A complaint can also be registered in one year and the FIR in the next.
